It hasn't been (re-)integrated in the 8.* version series, because of not yet existing MailExtension possibilities for the status bar. I'm not really happy about the missing feature, but have not yet decided, how to replace it. The main goal of the status bar item was the immediate HTML mode status visibility.

Sad news... For me, it provided the fastest and most convenient way for switching between HTML and plain text view if it was not for a single message only... Changing this setting deep in the menu structure is a pain in the ... you know what.
I would be very glad if something similar could be integrated again - by whatever means. Even some more (optional) buttons in the symbol bar would be fine (at least in my configuration, there's plenty of space up there).

The WebExtension / MailExtension API allows only one button (per toolbar) per addon. So I would have to either replace the button in the main toolbar and add the (permanent) toggle there, or I would have to create a second independent addon that you have to install additionally.

Thanks for the explanation.
Could that "one" button in the toolbar also be a dropdown box, just like it currently is also used for filtering for tags? That way, the complete functionality could be put into that one single button:
- just click at it (in the content area): show HTML temporarily;
- clicking at the small "v" would expand the list, showing the three available view modes;
- picking one of these sets the current default view (the same way as previously in the status bar).

I still occasionally ctl- or alt-click on the button hoping to get a plain text view instead of full html. (Often, a link is not active in html, so the plain text view makes it clickable.)
